Gainsborough Trinity 1 Nuneaton Town 0

Saturday 12th March, 2016;

Four years ago this May the Boro created a piece of history as they booked their place in the top-tier of non-league football with a dramatic play-off final win away at Gainsborough Trinity.

The stakes might not have been as high this time round but the play-offs were still on the agenda as Nuneaton searched for a three point haul that would put them a step nearer the knock-out stages of the season.

In 2012 Andy Brown struck the only goal of the game in a Boro win, this time Nathan Jarman repaid the favour with a goal in the dying embers of the game with Nuneaton unable to make history repeat itself.

With an enforced 12 day break between matches, the Boro could have been forgiven for failing to fire on all cylinders in the first half.

They failed to hit top gear in the opening 45 minutes, only registering one shot on goal in what was a stagnant opening half of football.

In recent weeks the Boro have reserved their best for after the half-time whistle, and it looked like that would be the case again in Lincolnshire.

Within minutes of the restart they had gone close twice with efforts from Ironside and then Byrne but neither effort needed Budtz to be called into action in the Gainsborough goal.
It seemed as if the Boro would be following a recent pattern but this time they were unable to kick on when on the front foot. In fact it was the home side who created the more dangerous chances after that, Nathan Jarman missing the clearest of them when he really should have netted.

Nuneaton were giving their hosts plenty of chances and it was no surprise when Jarman took the next one that fell his way in the 90th minute, coolly chesting a ball into the box before taking it past Lathaniel Rowe-Turner and slotting it wide of a helpless Jordan Smith.

The Boro briefly rallied with a shot from distance from Jack Lane, but it was too little too late, Trinity putting some of the pain of 2012 behind them to register the win.
