Spennymoor Town 0–1 Nuneaton Town

Nuneaton Town claimed victory in the North East on Saturday afternoon...

Ashley Chambers’s first half goal proved the difference as Boro defeated Spennymoor Town 1-0 at Brewery Field.

The frontman struck as Boro extended their unbeaten run to five, with the success their third on the road this season.

The match began with neither side able to gain a foothold. Despite having the lions share of possession early on Boro failed to threaten the Spennymoor goal. Whilst on the flip side the hosts carved two openings out of little dominance.

However on both occasions goalkeeper Dean Lyness was equal to the efforts of Town’s number nine Glen Taylor.

Then when Boro did find themselves in good positions Ryan Beswick’s set pieces did not come to fruition. The second of which, a corner, raced across the face of goal evading everyone.

But adding the finishing touch was not to be an issue for much longer as in the 24th minute Nuneaton struck the games only goal.

Having only initially half cleared a Spennymoor corner, Boro launched a lightening breakaway move. Tom Elliott led the charge before swiftly offloading the ball to James Ferry. The man on loan from Stevenage set free Daniel Nti who had expertly negotiated Moor’s offside trap.

Challenged with the on rushing goalkeeper, Nti knocked the ball past Jordan Porter and into the path of Chambers. The Boro’s top scorer showcased his ruthless composure as he rolled home into the open net.

Unfortunately the floodgates were not to open for Nuneaton and even a further sight of goal before the interval was not forthcoming.

Spennymoor’s Shane Henry tried his luck before the break but his swerving effort flew wide, as Boro’s lead remained intact.

Despite the surface continuing to cut up the matches tempo increased into the second period. Initially this was spearheaded by the home side as they sought to put themselves back in contention.

Nonetheless Boro remained resilient in defence and then threatened through Nti. However the forwards inviting cutback was not met by a teammate inside the area.

Although Boro’s good work was nearly undone with just half an hour remaining. A mix up inside the penalty area gave Henry a golden opportunity in front of goal, but heroically Kennedy Digie got a block in to divert the shot wide of the far post.

Such a scare brought the Boro back line into sharper focus who rose to the challenge. Whilst at the other end opportunities came that could have extended their advantage.

Substitute Kairo Mitchell dragged an effort wide after a superb first touch, before defender Luther Wildin displayed his attacking qualities when his cross nearly dropped in at the far post.

A second goal was not to come but Nuneaton showed character to hold out against play-off pushing Spennymoor side, with Kallum Griffiths’ late strike the last of their fruitless efforts on goal.

Victory means that Boro have now taken a possible 13 points from the last 15 available.

The team travel to Stockport County on Tuesday night in the Vanarama National League North, following the original fixture being postponed last weekend.
