ACADEMY: Busy time for the youngsters

Round-up from the Boro Academy...

IT’S been a hectic couple of weeks in the Academy with the start of the season for all three of our teams.
The Under-19s will compete in The National League U19 Alliance and both Under-18 squads will be the ECFA College Leagues.
The Under-19s started with a disappointing first day defeat at the hands of Boston United as we went down 2-1 here at the LDJ Solicitors Stadium. Despite dominating the game from start to finish, a late Ryan Richmond goal wasn’t enough to salvage a well-deserved point.
“We knew it would be a tough opener,” admitted Academy Manager, Liam O’Neill. “But I didn’t see a defeat coming, if I am honest.
“We missed lots of chances and have to be more clinical in the final third if we are to have the successful season that I expect.
“We must learn quickly that games are won in both boxes; you take your chances in one and take no risks in the other. We unfortunately made errors against Boston, but I am sure that the lads will bounce back in the right way.”
Earlier this week the Under-18s made progress in the FA Youth Cup with a 2-0 victory over Stratford Town as Jamal Adams and Harry Freestone grabbed our goals.
“It was a really patient performance from us,” continued O’Neill. “Stratford came and stuck 11 men behind the ball and to be fair to them, they made it awkward for us to break them down.
“We dominated possession and in the end the result was a fair one. I thought that our back four were excellent and it was really pleasing for Harry Freestone to get his goal, which sealed the win for us.
“Harry has been in and out of the team in the last month or two but has a habit of scoring important goals.
“It would be nice to get another home draw in the next round under the floodlights here at Liberty Way. There was a healthy crowd for the Stratford game and I know that the boys were really enthused by the support.”
