ACADEMY: Busy week full of positives

6 months ago By OL 2

The Academy have this week stepped up their preparations for the new season...

IT’S been an action-packed week for the Boro Academy with us taking on Solihull Moors in a double-header pre-season fixture.
We travelled to their CTC Kinghurst Academy and in the first game we won 3-1 in what was a very competitive encounter.
Having fallen behind to an early goal, strikes from Lewis Collins (2) and captain, Charlie Chechlacz, ensured that we were victorious.
Then, on Wednesday, we took another group of Academy lads and were beaten 4-2, although it gave Academy Manager, Liam O’Neill, an opportunity to see some of his new intake of scholars perform in a Boro shirt for the first time.
“Both games were extremely beneficial,” said O’Neill. “Particularly the second game as I was able to run the rule over some of the new lads that have joined us this summer.
“Despite the defeat, I was happy as we played well for 45 minutes, passing the ball and attacking through the thirds as we had spoken about beforehand.
“It’s always difficult with a new group of players to get them to gel, and along with making 11 substitutions during the second half, I thought we showed some extremely encouraging signs.
“The 3-1 win on Monday was a good overall performance. It was a game that we dominated throughout and, in all honesty, we could and should have won by a bigger margin.
“The group was predominantly scholars that played together last season and as a unit during pre-season.
“Lewis Collins, Jamal Adams and Charlie Chechlacz were a constant threat to our hosts in the final third; teams will struggle to cope with them this season judging by that performance.
“In terms of the result, it was fantastic and it was also good to be able to get minutes into the players. The biggest positive for me, though, was the way in which we passed the ball around.
“We were without the likes of Richmond, Ramos, Tweed and Glover, who were all training with the first-team that morning, so it was a real bonus to see some of the other lads step up to the plate.”
