Caretaker manager on our home reverse...
CARETAKER manager, Jon Ashton, took charge of his first game just hours after Tommy Wright’s departure and saw his side slip to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Stockport County.
“It’s been a bit of a whirlwind,” he said. “I don’t want to make excuses for the boys, but it does throw you as a player when your manager leaves, particularly on the eve of a game.
“It happens in football, but it was a similar story of us conceding goals because of silly mistakes.
“We could have been two or three goals up before they took the lead and then conceding a second just before the break made it difficult for us.
“We reacted well after the restart but again after looking the most likely side, we were hit with a sucker-punch.
“I’m gutted that we couldn’t get the win; we’d prepared well for the game and the lads were buzzing in training on Friday but then to get the news that Tommy was leaving took the wind out of their sails.”
