Each player, as well as Manager Dino Maamria and his backroom team, have selected their personal top three and aggregated the scores to settle on the definitive list. The Top 5 will be unveiled over the coming days as we build-up to the release of the Oscar and BAFTA nominated, stranger than fiction story of Olympic figure-skater Tonya Harding. I, Tonya is released on Friday the 23rd of February.
With only the first few votes in, a pattern began to emerge, quite quickly, that one film was going to run away with the vote and claim first place. That film was Coach Carter, a 2005 biographical drama directed by Thomas Carter. It is based on the true story of Richmond High School basketball coach Ken Carter (portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson), who made headlines in 1999 for benching his undefeated high school basketball team due to poor academic results.
The ensemble cast features Rob Brown, Channing Tatum, Debbi Morgan, and musical entertainer Ashanti. Coach Carter received generally positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, the site's consensus reads: "Even though it's based on a true story, Coach Carter is pretty formulaic stuff, but it's effective and energetic, thanks to a strong central performance from Samuel L. Jackson."
Ashley Chambers, Tom Elliott, Billy Daniels, Kennedy Digie and Adil Nabi all named Coach Carter as their favourite sports film. Elliott Turner, Kairo Mitchell and Luther Wildin also voted for the inspirational story, so, wth eight nominations, Coach Carter was the overwhelming winner of our poll.
