Each player, as well as Manager Dino Maamria and his backroom team, have selected their personal top three and aggregated the scores to settle on the definitive list. The Top 5 has been unveiled over the past week as we build-up to the release of the Oscar and BAFTA nominated, stranger than fiction story of Olympic figure-skater Tonya Harding. I, Tonya is released on Friday the 23rd of February.
American football appears on our list for the first time, at number two, in the shape of Any Given Sunday. Directed by Oliver Stone, it depicts a fictional professional team, the Miami Sharks. The film features an ensemble cast, including Al Pacino, Cameron Diaz, Dennis Quaid, Jamie Foxx, James Woods, LL Cool J and NFL legends Jim Brown and Lawrence Taylor. It is partly based on the novel On Any Given Sunday by famed NFL defensive end Pat Toomay.
The title is derived from a line in the book (also used in the film) that a team can win or lose on "any given Sunday", said by the fictitious coach Tony D'Amato. Cameo roles also featured many former American football players including Dick Butkus, Warren Moon, Emmitt Smith, Terrell Owens and Toomay himself. Maamria, Fitness Coach Elliott Turner and Ryan Beswick all listed Any Given Sunday as their favourite sports film with Beswick describing it as “a great film that shows what you can do if you want it enough.” Jon Ashton and Dean Lyness also voted for it, helping it narrowly edge Southpaw for second place.
