Nuneaton Town grabbed their first win – and goals – of pre-season in an emphatic win away at Banbury.
After taking on Coventry City and Birmingham City so far, the Boro were back on familiar territory as they took on a spirited Banbury side.
Kevin Wilson had promised plenty of passing football this season, and his side had delivered in the two stellar friendlies of the summer.
But, when facing a team quick to close them down, the Boro continued to thrive with their new approach as goals from Aaron Williams, Nathan Hicks and Courtney Baker-Richardson saw them to victory.
In what was a competitive first half, chances were few and far between, with those that were created coming courtesy of the visiting Boro side.
First James Reid sent a volley high, wide and handsome when well placed at the far post, only for Jack Lane to then head one over from a similar position inside the box 20 minutes later.
Both chances could easily have resulted in goals, as it was it was the hardest of the opening three created that led to the breakthrough.
It came from new-man Aaron Williams as he did what he did so often last season, finding the back of the net in devastating style.
The former Rushall man picked the ball up on the edge of the box and left Banbury keeper Jack Harding with no chance as he curled it just inside the right hand post and into the back of the net.
That was the last chance of a high-tempo first half.
The second half started with no changes from Nuneaton, but that didn't last long as the first 15 minutes of play was disrupted by a series of substitutions.
As a result, all of the pace went out of the game, the match almost becoming a non-affair.
That all changed with less than 20 minutes remaining, though, as Nathan Hicks doubled the Boro lead with another smart finish.
He hit a well-struck effort into the top corner from inside the box, but the credit has to go to Ryan Smith as creator.
The youngster turned his man inside out on the right wing before sending over a left-footed cross that Hicks did the rest with.
Pre-season is normally a time for players to get fitness levels up and for new players to gel. This one, though, was also a game to watch if you want to learn how to finish as substitute Courtney Baker-Richardson added his own spectacular touch to proceedings with a wonderful curling effort on the stroke of full-time, one that once again keeper Jack Harding had no chance with.
