Nuneaton Town 0 Salford City 2
Boro's home streak broken by league leaders
Nuneaton Town suffered their first defeat at home in over three months as Salford City maintained their lead at the top of the Vanarama National League North. First half goals from Nicholas Haughton and Carl Piergianni were enough for the Ammies as they inflicted a 2-0 defeat on the Boro', completing the league double for the season.
The defeat was an especially bitter pill for the Boro' as George Green left on a stretcher shortly before the second goal. The midfield maestro seemed to be in considerable discomfort as he was immediately taken to hospital. The first goal came direct from a free kick as Haughton's dead ball strike dipped over the defensive wall and nestled in the corner with Ross Etheridge unable to do much about it.
It could have different for the Boro' had Daniel Nti's early effort given Nuneaton the lead, but a good defensive block took the sting out of his goalbound strike and carried it in to the arms of a grateful 'keeper. Tom Elliott, once again, looked lively throughout but his ball in to the danger area was nipped off the toes of Ashley Chambers before the prolific striker could get his shot off.
Following a lengthy stoppage to attend to Green's injury, Salford doubled their advantage from another free kick, this time Piergiani heading home from just outside the six yard box shortly before the half time break.
Nuneaton pushed hard for a way back in to the game in the second half, but a stout defensive effort from Salford thwarted every advance. Etheridge had to be alert to make a good save at the feet of Mani Dieseruvwe late on to keep the score within reach but, try as they did, the Boro' couldn't find a way through.
Gary Charles' side won't have to wait long for a chance to get back to winning ways as they travel to the Tameside Stadium on Monday the 16th of April to face Curzon Ashton.
